From a conversation with David List; It was a day's journey to Ipswich due to the state of the road staying and stabling overnight at The Halberd or The Blue Coat Boy. It wasn't until 1904 ish that the road had improved sufficiently to get there and back the same day. It was the first private regular service into Ipswich  from anywhere. The only other regular service was run by the Great Eastern Railway from Maningtree . I believe this was before or during the construction of the Ipswich railway tunnel .
